Romans - Chapter 16 (part 2)

ROMANS CHAPTER 16 - PART II
March 7, 2012

Romans 16:16

16 Greet one another with a holy kiss.  All the churches of Christ send greetings.
17 I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.
2 Thessalonians 3:6, 14
6 In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching[a] you received from us.
14 Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them, in order that they may feel ashamed.
18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.
Philippians 3:19
19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.                                                                                                                                                                              Colossians 2:4
4 I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.
19 Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I rejoice because of you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.
Wise about what is good.
Romans 1:8
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world.
20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.    The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.  (It makes me wonder; did Paul have a new appreciation of who Satan was when he came to Christ?)
21 Timothy, my co-worker, sends his greetings to you, as do Lucius, Jason and Sosipater, my fellow Jews.(OR MY RELATIVES)
Acts 16:1  Timothy Joins Paul and Silas
1 Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer but whose father was a Greek.
Acts 13
1 Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul.
Acts 17:5
5 But other Jews were jealous; so they rounded up some bad characters from the marketplace, formed a mob and started a riot in the city. They rushed to Jason’s house in search of Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the crowd.
22 I, Tertius, (a slaves name meaning simply 3rd or #3) (obviously a well educated slave) who wrote down this letter, greet you in the Lord.
23 Gaius, whose hospitality I and the whole church here enjoy, sends you his greetings. (We’ve been hanging out at his place)
Erastus, who is the city’s director of public works, and our brother Quartus (#4 or fourth; another slave’s name) send you their greetings. [24] [e]
Now this is probably where Paul takes over writing the words of this document in his own hand. *Refer to:
2 Thessalonians 3:17-18
17I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand, which is the distinguishing mark in all my letters.  This is how I write.  18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
25 Now to him who is able to establish you (HE is able, amen!) in accordance with my gospel, the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ (Yeshua Messiah), in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all the Gentiles (OR ALL NATIONS) might come to the obedience that comes from[f] faith— 27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.
Isaiah 53
1 Who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
4 Surely he took up our pain
   and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
   stricken by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
   he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
   each of us has turned to our own way;
and the LORD has laid on him
   the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed and afflicted,
   yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
8 By oppression[
a] and judgment he was taken away.
Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was punished.[
b]
9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
   and though the LORD makes[
c] his life an offering for sin,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.
11 After he has suffered,
he will see the light of life[
d] and be satisfied[e];
by his knowledge[
f] my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,[g]
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,[
h]
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.

 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Jesus Messiah, we remember and honor you.

Romans - Chapter 16 (part 1)

Romans 16 Part I   What’s in a Name?

This is final chapter of the book of Romans contains a long listing on names.  Names preserved for all time.  Personal friends of Paul.  It’s said that to most people the sweetest sound to the ear is the speaking of your name.  I know in K-1 and youth ministry it is always important to speak their name when you see them and when they leave.  It makes them feel known, wanted, good.
In this chapter Paul lists 33 names, 9 with Paul (8 men, 1 woman).  He mentions 24 names in the city of Rome (17 men, 7 women).  He then calls out 2 households and even mentions 2 unnamed but important women.

These names show that people of faith had infiltrated all levels of society.
Personal Greetings
1 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon (or servant) of the church in Cenchreae (back in Corinth) 2 I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.
3 Greet Priscilla[c] and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. 4 They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them.   5 Greet also the church that meets at their house.
Acts 18:18 Priscilla, Aquila and Apollos
18 Paul stayed on in Corinth for some time. Then he left the brothers and sisters and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. Before he sailed, he had his hair cut off at Cenchreae because of a vow he had taken.
Acts 18:2
2 There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them,
Acts 18:18-28
18 Paul stayed on in Corinth for some time. Then he left the brothers and sisters and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. Before he sailed, he had his hair cut off at Cenchreae because of a vow he had taken. 19 They arrived at Ephesus, where Paul left Priscilla and Aquila. He himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they asked him to spend more time with them, he declined. 21 But as he left, he promised, “I will come back if it is God’s will.” Then he set sail from Ephesus. 22 When he landed at Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem and greeted the church and then went down to Antioch.
23 After spending some time in Antioch, Paul set out from there and traveled from place to place throughout the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
24 Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor[a] and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.
27 When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia the brothers and sisters encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. When he arrived, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. 28 For he vigorously refuted his Jewish opponents in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Messiah.
1 Corinthians 16:19 Final Greetings
19 The churches in the province of Asia send you greetings. Aquila and Priscilla[a] greet you warmly in the Lord, and so does the church that meets at their house.
2 Timothy 4:19 Final Greetings

6 Greet Mary, who worked very hard for you.
 7 Greet Andronicus and Junia my fellow Jews (in some versions; my relatives) who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding among[d] the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was.  How interesting;
8 Greet Ampliatus, my dear friend in the Lord. 9 Greet Urbanus,(We get the word urban from this, it literally means; ‘city bred’ or from the city ) our co-worker in Christ, and my dear friend Stachys. (means; ‘ear of corn’, so the best from the city and country)
10 Greet Apelles, whose fidelity to Christ has stood the test   Greet those who belong to the household of Aristobulus. (thought to be the very grandson of King Herod the Great of Rome!)
11 Greet Herodion, my fellow Jew.
Greet those in the household of Narcissus who are in the Lord. (in Greek mythology, a youth who was punished for repulsing Echo's love by being made to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool. He died gazing at his own image, and was turned into a flower.)
12 Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, those women who work hard in the Lord.     Greet my dear friend Persis, another woman who has worked very hard in the Lord.
13 Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me, too.
Mark 15:21 The Crucifixion of Jesus
21 A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.

Table Talk
1.       If the bible was written today and your name was it, what do you think it would say?
2.       What would you wish it would say?
3.       How do you think Christ is calling for you to pick up the cross for Him?
